now, we're counting down to tonight's presidential debate. mitt romney's motorcade just pulled up at the debate hall. president obama's expected to arrive in denver any minute as well. we'll be talking with top supporters of each candidate. the former new york city mayor rudy giuliani, he'll join us live this hour. also we'll be hearing from both candidates' wives in special cnn interviews. today, by the way, is the obama's 20th wedding anniversary. so what's it like spending the night with the romneys? i'm wolf blitzer, you're in "the situation room." >>> 34 days from the presidential election but much more importantly right now at least right now we've reached what may be the most decisive night of the 2012 campaign, the first presidential debate at the university of denver. after weeks of downplaying expectations, mitt romney's campaign insiders are finally opening up about what they really think can be accomplished tonight. cnn's national political correspondent jim acosta is in denver getting ready to set the scene. jim. >> reporter: wolf, the romney campaign sees the polls m

's at 51%. mitt romney is at 43%. both campaigns think this one is getting more difficult by the moment for mitt romney to win. however -- and this is where it gets fascinating -- in virginia, the president's lead has shrunk to just two points, within the margin of error. last month president obama led by five points there. in florida, mitt romney has closed the gap as well. he's now statistically tied in the state of florida. it is a one-point lead. 47%-46%. al hunt, it is fascinating. ohio seems to be on its own as far as the swing states go. but we could show other swing state polls in colorado, in nevada, in north carolina. these states are really getting tight, to such a degree that a great performance by romney tonight could change the dynamic. >> conceivably, but i don't think it's quite that close yet. i think you certainly see it, as you point out, in florida and virginia. you don't see it in ohio. wisconsin it looks like it's actually widening. iowa, it's four to six. and the problem by taking michigan and pennsylvania off the table, which really the romney people have done de

this to be a forward-looking election. that's part of the problem that romney and the rks have had, they want it to be a retrospective referendum on the first term. the voters are looking to see who will be better for the next four years? that pattern seems kind of incredible. >> that said, i can't imagine that romney will bring this up overtly but could he subtly use this in the debate? >> reporter: i don't know. i honestly don't think he's going to go there himself. this is the kind of thing that happens by outside groups or outside activists and the reality is, this is an intensely racially polarized country. barack obama will probably win somewhere around the votes of 80% of all minority voters, growing share of the electorate, but only 40% of white voter. it will be a real challenge after this election to try to bring the country together to govern. he was the first candidate ever to lose white business double digits and win. there is a racial element that is in the backdrop here. not necessarily racism, but very different views about the role of government and very different views about

don't know how the election is going to come up and make no predictions but i do ask myself if romney gets smashed i don't think the political problem is we have a center left problem and we have a far right party that is a structural problem. the republican party has gone nuts in my view. they've been at war -- there's been a simultaneous -- they've been simultaneously at war with physics at the same time. on the deficit and biological l2 mac, some of them for sure. so the question to me is what happens the morning after this election if romney loses. he wasn't far right enough. i wonder if the morning after the morning after. people would say we have gone too far to the right and we need a different republican party which i think the country desperately needs because it needs to be center-left and it's the only way we agree to get big compromises on these issues. >> can i add the role of history suggests the clinton and ronald reagan the second term as the productive term, the big achievement so it's hard to know whether the republican party will -- where they will push the blame if

will host the first presidential debate this evening. mitt romney has been preparing for the debates in denver the past few days. president obama has been preching in neff. both have been keeping low profiles in recent days. meanwhile republicans are seizing on comments vice president joe biden made at a campaign stop yesterday to say the obama administration's economic policies are not working. >> how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that's been buried the last four years. >> of course the middle class has been buried. they're being bear ruried by regulations, taxes, borrowing. they're being buried by the obama administration's economic failures. >> biden later tried to clarify his comment by saying the middle class was buried by policies mitt romney and paul ryan supported. >>> and mitt romney's campaign has called tonight's debate a restart of the campaign. right now the republican nominee trails by 3% among likely voters. that is according to the latest nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. that is also within the poll's margin of error. the president leads by se
